There's a coffee and there's a doughnut. But if you have to choose between a muffin and a toast sandwich, a warm biscuit and a cold oatmeal, what do you choose? It depends on how you want to feel, according to one study. "Our research suggests that people go out to eat to get pleasure, and they are attracted to foods that they perceive will make them feel good, " said David Just, of the University of Pennsylvania, who wrote an article on the research published in The Journal of Consumer Psychology. The study, presented at this week's meeting of the American Psychological Association, found that people eat different foods according to how they feel. While they crave foods that make them feel good, people also turn to foods that make them feel bad if they are feeling low, he said. "When they eat foods with unpleasant taste and smell they still eat them because they believe that these foods will make them feel good." The foods included in the study were cookies, pizza, French fries and doughnuts. They were served cold or warm. And people were asked to complete questionnaires and provide a short paragraph about how they felt. The results showed that people's ratings of how good they felt when they ate the foods didn't match with what they knew about the foods. They rated French fries as much more pleasant when they were cold and pizza as much more pleasant when they were warm. "It seems they didn't necessarily relate how good they felt to their actual experience when they ate the foods," Just said. "This disconnect between what you think the foods will make you feel and what actually makes you feel a good mood is something people may want to pay attention to when they eat out or are tempted to buy foods that they know will make them feel good." The study was presented by Just and W. Keith Cheng, of the University of Calgary. A copy of the article is available at www.apa.org/journals/jcps. More ADVERTISEMENT Watch video of 1cb139a0ed
